THE IDEA
HANS-GEORG FIEDERLING-KAPTEINAT
AND STEPHAN SCHMIDT

Geologist Hans-Georg Fiederling-Kapteinat is the driving force behind CLAYBORN, the whisky with (earth) history. He developed the innovative extraction process to win AQUA TERTIARY, the water stored in the Westerwald clay since its sedimentation. The extraordinary qualities of this water and its almost absolute purity inspired him to refine whiskies.

Together with Stephan Schmidt, ceramic engineer and managing partner of the Stephan Schmidt Group, they initiated and realized the project AQUA TERTIARY and CLAYBORN WHISKY.

PURITY
FROM SEDIMENTATION

Since the formation of the clay deposits in the Tertiary, the water has been removed from the water cycle and has had no contact with ground or flowing waters. AQUA TERTIARY is therefore free from any anthropogenic influences or contamination.

35 MILLION YEARS TERTIARY WATER
FROM WESTERWALD CLAY

Westerwald Clay qualities stored here enjoy worldwide reputation. Their age - including the water bound in them - is known from geological investigations. The age of AQUA TERTIARY cannot be determined directly due to the lack of detection methods. AQUA TERTIARY originates from Eocene clay and has thus been firmly bound to the clay in the deposit for 35 million years.

SINGLE MALT
EX-BOURBON CASK AND AQUA TERTIARY

A strong character: Over 4 years the single malt whisky matured at the Birkenhof Distillery for CLAYBORN WHISKY. A short period of time compared to 35 million years that the AQUA TERTIARY spent in the clay layers of the earth.

PRIMEVAL
AND TASTEFUL

The combination of pure water, which has been embedded in the Westerwald clay for 35 million years, and a single malt whisky, The result is a whisky with intense aromas of dark chocolate, fully ripe fruit, Karamell and cigar. Classic, earthy, with elegant citrus and hazelnut notes.

A WHISKY WITH HISTORY
ACROSS GEOLOGICAL AGES PREHISTORIC AND TASTEFUL

With CLAYBORN WHISKY we connect two worlds. A first-class single malt whisky, matured in an ex-bourbon cask, combined with AQUA TERTIARY, a "Westerwälder Original," which has never been seen before. With this water, an excellent single malt whisky is transformed into a whisky with history - across earth ages.

EXCEPTIONAL
IN TASTE AND APPEARANCE

CLAYBORN WHISKY is protected from light and external influences in a black glazed stoneware bottle. A homage to the Westerwald and the history of whisky, which - just like mineral water in the Westerwald area - was filled in early times in clay jugs and stoneware bottles.

FASCINATION CLAY

HANS-GEORG FIEDERLING-KAPTEINAT

geologist

has been working with Westerwald clays for more than 40 years. As a geologist, he has travelled to almost all continents, bringing home not only clays but also whiskies from all over the world. The idea of combining both, developed into AQUA TERTIARY and CLAYBORN WHISKY, a whisky with (earth) history.
